About the event
Our always popular “Take A Lawyer to Lunch” Summer Lunch is the one program of the year where we can each invite an outside counsel of our choice to join us for networking and getting to know one another. This year’s lunch includes CLE, with a presentation on The Essential Lawyer by Sterling Miller, a three time prior GC and author of “Ten Things You Need to Know as In-House Counsel” who is currently at Hilgers Graben and Jane McBride, General Counsel of Optimus Legal and legal marketing and career expert.
"The Essential Lawyer" is a presentation on the elements of “essentialism” and how lawyers can use it to become more productive and of more value to the organization. The concept of “essentialism” is described as: Essentialism isn’t about getting more done in less time. It’s not about getting less done. It’s about getting only the right things done. It’s about challenging the core assumption of ‘we can have it all’ and ‘I have to do everything’ and replacing it with the pursuit of ‘the right thing, in the right way, at the right time’. It’s about regaining control of our own choices about where to spend our time and energies instead of giving others implicit permission to choose for us.”
The presentation covers how to apply essentialism to your day-to-day work and how to make the hard decisions about what to do and what not to do. It also covers how lawyers perceive themselves as “essential” to the business and to their clients, and how the business and their clients perceive “essential” lawyers and how the two intersect – or don’t – and why that’s important.
